In the Bible thanksgiving is an attitude, not a holiday, that is to be demonstrated at all times, long after the dinner guests have gone home and the leftovers have been put away. But suppose we are having a bad day, perhaps a bad week, or worse still, a bad year. Maybe we’re undergoing physical problems; perhaps we’re struggling financially; maybe we’re at the end of our rope emotionally. Does that excuse us from being thankful? In Psalm 136 we are reminded that our gratitude should not be dependent on what life brings our way because sometimes life is a lot harder than we’d like it to be. So rather than being subject to good happenings, our gratitude ought to be grounded in that which will allow us to be grateful at all times, including the most difficult of times.
