Happiness is something everyone desires and yet few actually experience. However, in the Beatitudes Jesus reveals the basis of a happy life as nine times He states "Blessed are ..." using the Greek word that means "happy, fortunate, or blissful." But instead of referring to the kind of happiness that is based on right circumstances, the kind of happiness Jesus spoke of had to do with an inward contentedness that is unaffected by circumstances as it is based on right attitudes. Looking at the very first attitude (which is foundational to all the rest), we discover that true happiness is possible when we are poor in spirit.
